Invest in high impact experiences

Help create life changing experiences by investing in the Undergraduate Research Initiative (URI).

Doing undergraduate research sparks curiosity and unleashes creativity. It takes students out of the classroom and into the field, the lab and the world. It encourages students to take risks and tackle big problems.

The URI:

  • Creates opportunities for students to do research by funding their interdisciplinary projects.
  • Celebrates achievements through the Festival of Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities – an annual series of events including research crawls, presentations, performances, and the Undergraduate Research Symposium
  • Equips students with research skills and knowledge through seminars, workshops and class visits.
  • Builds a culture of undergraduate research at UAlberta by helping to integrate undergraduate research and teaching across disciplines.

The Impact of Your Donations

“These summer experiences can ignite a lifelong passion for future research and the potential for some of the best and brightest to lift off. You never know how far someone will go with just a little spring to get them started.”

~ 1st year Science student, URI Stipend recipient

Since 2011, the URI has funded more than 120 interdisciplinary undergraduate research projects. URI has helped thousands of other aspiring researchers take their first steps by providing one-on-one advising, research skill development workshops and other research-related activities.

But creating a campus-wide culture of undergraduate research requires more than supporting individual students. It takes a community of passionate and curious people who believe that students don’t come to university to just absorb knowledge.

Undergraduate research provides opportunities for students to take charge of their learning – to learn how to think critically, ask questions, express ideas, and discover how they can become active, engaged citizens and leaders.

This funded opportunity has been life altering. I feel like I now have endless possibilities. This experience has made me feel validated as a student, researcher, and contributor to making my society a better place. It is because of the support of URI that I have been able to, for the first time in my life, focus on school and my research interests. I have learnt that we are not just undergraduate students.”

"I am extremely glad about this initiative […] I definitely feel that this has sparked curiosity and awareness in the general student population. Coming from a science background, it's refreshing to see research initiatives from students of other faculties.

"URI provides a way and an opportunity for students to grow and advance beyond the limitations of course work. It makes it possible for students to say “Look at the work I’ve done.” instead of “I wish I could do that.” This research experience has been one in which has allowed me to expand my skills and create a meaningful education experience for myself. And for that, I am thankful that such a program exists."
